Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a muffin tin with paper liners or grease it lightly with butter.
Prepare the Dry Ingredients:
In a medium bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
Mix the Wet Ingredients:
In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. You can use an electric mixer or beat by hand.
Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, alternating with the milk. Begin and end with the dry ingredients, mixing just until combined.
Fold in the chocolate chips or chunks.
Fill the Muffin Tins:
Spoon a small amount of batter into each muffin cup, filling it about one-third full.
Place a piece of dark chocolate in the center of each muffin cup, pressing it slightly into the batter.
