In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.

Prepare the maple sauce:

In a medium saucepan, combine the maple syrup and heavy cream.

Bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.

Once it starts to boil, remove from heat and carefully pour the hot maple syrup mixture over the cake batter in the baking dish. Do not stir.

Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the top of the cake is golden and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

Serve warm: The cake will absorb some of the maple sauce, and the remaining sauce will create a luscious layer at the bottom. Serve the pudding chômeur warm, spooning some of the sauce from the bottom over each serving.
